| Q. | Fixtures, General |
| 1. | Specify fixtures using a minimum of water consistent with fixture application. Install flow control devices to limit water use, except in tank and flushometer water closets and urinals. Conservation of water shall be the prime consideration in the selection of fixtures except water closets. Only upon approval of the administrative authority for the University shall water saving water closet be used. |
| 2. | Vitreous ware shall be institutional quality. |
| 3. | Specify cast iron enameled ware with acid-resisting enamel. |
| 4. | Specify knee, elbow or foot operation of plumbing fixtures in buildings or areas where aseptic technique, utmost cleanliness or sanitary hygienic procedures are required. Examples that require this consideration are hospitals, kitchens, infectious disease laboratories, etc. |
| 5. | Manufacturer's name and numbers listed are used only to indicate type and quality. Fixtures of other manufacturers such as Crane, Eljer or Kohler equivalent may be specified. |
| 6. | Specify fixtures complete with trims, where applicable. Exposed trims shall be coordinated with finish of plumbing fittings. |
| 7. | Coordinate handicapped fixtures, fittings, and mounting heights with the architectural drawings. |
| 8. | Provide stops in hot and cold water lines serving all fixtures, including hose bibbs. |
| R. | Fixture Installation |
| 1. | Detail mounting requirements for plumbing fixtures and include under the plumbing work. |
| 2. | Show details for wall-mounted plumbing fixtures. Coordinate with metal stud framing section and architectural drawings. |
| S. | Fixture Connections |
| Specify the following items: |
| 1. | Exposed water supply pipe, tubing and waste piping connections shall be chrome-plated brass. |
| 2. | Fit supply pipe, tubing, and other connections with chrome-plated brass escutcheons at walls. |
| 3. | Cover exposed bolt heads in floor flanges of any fixture, in the back of any fixture, or in the fixture itself, with porcelain bolt caps securely held in place with putty. |
| 4. | Fit fixtures tight to walls and seal joint. Coordinate sealant with architectural. |
| 5. | Specify red brass for all nipples from copper water lines to fixture stops. Do not allow galvanized nipples. |
| T. | Water Closets |
| In general, water closets shall be wall-mounted type with flush valves without saving devices. Tank type may be used at single installations where water pressure is low or where extreme quietness is required. Confirm disabled access requirements. |
| 1. | Wall Mounted: American Standard Instanto with blowout flushing action, and Smith or equal appropriate foot support with short foot securely bolted to floor. Specify commercial wall hanger. |
| 2. | Floor Mounted: American Standard Madera. |
| 3. | Tank Type: American Standard Elongated Cadet. |
| 4. | Water Closet Seats: Solid plastic, white, open front, less cover. Seats shall be self-raising in men's toilet rooms without urinals. |
| 5. | Flush Valves: Non-hold-open diaphragm type with screwdriver stop and vacuum breaker. |
| U. | Urinals |
| American Standard Jetbrook vitreous china blowout flushing rim urinal with top spud. Specify with 3" waste to prevent clogging with cigarettes or paper. Flush Valve: Non-hold-open diaphragm type with screwdriver stop and vacuum breaker. Specify commercial wall hanger. |
| V. | Lavatories |
| American Standard Lucerne 20" x 18" vitreous china with two-handle mixing faucets. Where required for handicapped use, provide single-lever mixing faucets. Specify commercial wall hanger for wall mounted lavatories. |
| W. | Service Sinks |
| 1. | Trap Standard-Mounted: American Standard Lakewell with plain back. |
| 2. | Floor-Mounted: Fiat molded-stone type, size as required. |
| X. | Emergency Showers And Eyewash Station Locations |
| The scope and application of the updated Cal/OSHA regulations are expanded from corrosive liquids to all hazardous substances, including materials that are otherwise harmful and likely to cause injury. All emergency eyewash and showers must comply with CCR Title 8, Section 5162, ANSI standard Z358.1-1981 and the following: |
| 1. | An emergency eyewash/shower shall be provided in work areas where the eyes and/or body may come into contact with hazardous substances. The eyewash and shower shall be located such that they can be reached from any point in the laboratory within 10 seconds and be used simultaneously. Eyewash and shower must be readily visible (using signs, bright paint, etc.) and area must be well lighted. Eyewash and shower may be located between laboratories, ancillary spaces or corridors provided ANSI standards are met. |
| 2. | The floor space below an emergency show/eyewash must be kept free and clear of obstructions at all times for a distance of 30" diameter circle. In addition, the free floor space shall be delineated by 2" wide yellow tape. |
| 3. | Personal eyewash/shower equipment (i.e., squeeze bottles, hand held drench hoses, etc.) may be installed to support shower and eyewash units but shall not be substituted for them. |
| 4. | All equipment shall be connected to a potable water supply with 1-1/2" minimum pipe size. |
| 5. | All units require valve hold-open devices. Water flow must be intentionally shut off. |
| Y. | Emergency Shower And Eyewash Station Products |
| 1. | Types: |
| a. | Wall-Mounted: Haws Model No. 7460BT eyewash, mounted with 42" rim height. Eye washes shall be provided with drains, trapped and connected to a waste system. Emergency shower shall be Haws Model 8162H or V. |
| b. | Pedestal-Mounted: Haws Model 8300. Use only in remodeling projects or where wall-mounted type is not practical. |
| 2. | Features and Installation: |
| a. | Provide chrome-plated tubing P traps only where the eyewash station trap is vented and the waste discharges into a sanitary sewer system. |
| b. | No drum traps are allowed. |
| c. | Provide trap primers at all eyewash stations and floor drains serving emergency showers. |
| d. | Securely brace and anchor pedestal-mounted units to wall (coordinate with architectural for blocking at stud walls). |
| e. | Provide an accessible shutoff valve in the line serving both the eyewash station and the emergency shower. |
| Z. | Laboratory Outlets |
| 1. | Provide hoods, laboratory tables, etc., with required type outlets manufactured by Water Saver Faucet Company, T&S Brass Company or equal. Provide color index handles. |
| 2. | Specify valves on laboratory benches, tables and other equipment with index handles showing type of service. |
| 3. | Do not use plastic faucets for DI systems as they break frequently. Use appropriately lined metal faucets. |
