Fire and Life Safety - 02 - Plan Review Process

In order to ascertain that all Building and Fire Code concerns are addressed and make the plan check process work in an efficient manner, the following guidelines shall be followed:

  1. Meetings

  2. a. A representative of the Planning, Design, and Construction Office shall contact the UC Fire Prevention Division (UCFPD) during the Design Development Stage so that a representative of the Campus Fire Marshal's Office can attend meetings that may be scheduled which have to do with the proposed project.

  3. Preliminary Reviews

  4. a. When the preliminary reviews, such as site plans, are ready, the Project Manager shall contact the UCFPD so that the Campus Fire Marshal can contact the City of Berkeley Fire Department for their input.

    b. A minimum of three copies of the site plans are needed for the Berkeley Fire Department to review and stamp: one copy for Berkeley Fire Department to retain, one copy for the UCFPD's file and one copy to incorporate into building plans for submittal to the State Fire Marshal. Please allow 15 days for the Berkeley Fire Department review process.

  5. Items which are of concern to the Berkeley Fire Department include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

  6. a. Fire flow

    b. Access for fire fighting apparatus

    c. Fire hydrant(s)

    d. Annunciator panel locations

    e. Fire Department connections for standpipe and fire sprinkler systems

    f. Other built in fire protection systems

    g. Knox Box location

  7. Plan Submittal

  8. a. Partial plans may be submitted to the UCFPD for a partial plan review and to assist the architect in planning their project. Appointments with the Designated Campus Fire Marshal may be scheduled by the Project Manager to discuss concerns regarding a project. These partial plans are left with the reviewer, if needed, to do a more complete review. These plans and comments will be returned to the Project Manager.

    b. At least one complete set of plans and specifications shall be submitted to the Designated Campus Fire Marshal for review. This submittal is handled through the Project Manager.

    c. If it is necessary to schedule a meeting with the State Fire Marshal's Office with regard to a proposed project, it shall be coordinated with the Designated Campus Fire Marshal.
