Buildings will be designed with a "mail room." The mail room is a
location in which building occupants will deposit their outgoing US mail and outgoing campus mail,
and in which UC Berkeley Mail Services will deposit occupants' incoming US mail and incoming campus
mail. |

It is preferred that the mail room be a separate room. However,depending
on the overall plan for the building, the mail room may be a section of a room devoted to other
building support services so long as the security of the mail can be assured, as described below. |

The mail room must be relatively secure to protect the mail inside it.
It must be available to building occupants and to UC Berkeley Mail Services, but it must not be
accessible to non-occupants or the general public. |

The mail room will be of sufficient size to meet the current and
forseeable mailing needs of the departments residing in the building, as well as the needs of UC
Berkeley Mail Services. These needs will be determined during the design stage of a new building or
major renovation by [the committee charged with programming]. |

The mail room will be furnished with mailing equipment appropriate to the
needs of the departments residing in the building, as well as the needs of UC Berkeley Mail Services.
In most cases, this equipment is simply sorting cases, but other equipment may be required in some
