| Sather Gate Restoration |
Sather Gate, the iconic southern entrance to the central campus, needs to be restored after almost 100 years of welcoming Cal students in all kinds of weather.
On Monday October 13, 2008, crews began the process of removing the cast bronze and interior steel frame. By the end of November, all the metal should be removed from the gate. The stone columns will not be removed and work to strengthen them will take place while the bronze is being repaired. A new steel frame is scheduled to be installed next spring, along with the repaired decorative metal. The familiar form of Sather Gate will remain unchanged but the structure will be stronger and safer for its next 100 years. The gate should be fully restored before the end of the Spring 2009 semester.
Pedestrian and emergency vehicle access in the area will be maintained throughout the project, although there may be temporary detours for pedestrians during the day. The area around the gate will remain open in the evenings and on weekends. The safety of all those working and traveling around the gate is important - please respect any temporary barricades or detours.
For more information about this historic gateway and the project, please see the story posted online at: http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2008/10/06_sathergate.shtml.
If you have any questions about the project, please contact Christine Shaff, UC Berkeley Facilities Services, at 643-4793 or cshaff@berkeley.edu.
