Start of Construction

Construction activities for a new UC Berkeley Early Childhood Education Center, located on Haste Street just west of Dana Street, are scheduled to begin Monday, October 3. 

The building, a new two-story wood-framed child care and education facility, will accommodate 74 children.  Designed to be a place to love even if you were two feet tall and just learning to fingerpaint, the Center includes classrooms and play areas; a garden and outdoor play equipment; research rooms and offices.  It will provide a living laboratory for educators to research and rethink the crucial first years of life while training the next generation of early childhood teachers. The initial phase of construction in fall ’05 will include earthwork and creating the building’s foundation.  Construction of the new structure is scheduled to begin in January 2006.   The Center is expected to open for the Spring 2007 semester. 

Hours of construction are 7am - 7pm weekdays, although most days construction activities will end around 4pm.  Any necessary weekend work would take place starting at 9am.  The project will adhere to regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes, and storm-water runoff. 

We understand that construction projects of this kind cause noise and other disruptions to the surrounding area, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to our neighbors.  Our project teams are doing their best to minimize disruption.  We appreciate your patience.
