Wellman Courtyard Improvements
Project Update
May 10, 2005
Finishing work at the Wellman Courtyard has been delayed by the bad weather we are having, so opening of the courtyard has been delayed a few days. It is now expected to open for business on Monday, May 16, 2005.
May 6, 2005
Finishing work around the courtyard is underway. It is scheduled to open for parking on Thursday, May 12, 2005.
March 17, 2005
While project work has been delayed by wet weather, the foundation for the new courtyard is nearly complete. Installation of the pavers is scheduled to start the week of March 21. For those near the courtyard, there will be some new noise associated with paver installation as some of them will be cut on site. The courtyard is expected to open for use by the end of April 2005, weather permitting.
August 2004
The demolition in Wellman Courtyard was completed on Thursday Aug. 19. The fence around the area will remain up until construction of the new parking court, which is expected to be complete before the start of the spring semester. Parking in the courtyard and driveways around Wellman Hall has been restored.
The project team is pleased to report that most of materials removed from the demolition at the courtyard were recycled, including all of the concrete, steel, copper, other metals, and asphalt.
Demolition begins August 10, 2004
The Wellman Courtyard, bounded by Wellman, Giannini and Hilgard Halls and the MRI Trailer, is ready to undergo construction that will create a landscaped, multi-use parking court in the courtyard. The area will have 42 parking spaces, including 4 disabled spaces, 3 PP-CS spaces and a ‘loading only’ space. The area has been designed so that it can also be used as outdoor event space. The MRI trailer will remain at the north end of the courtyard.
Work in the Wellman Courtyard will take place in phases, with demolition of the office trailers scheduled in August before classes resume. Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2004 and is expected to complete before the start of the Spring 2005 semester.
Demolition of the office trailers currently located in the courtyard will begin Tuesday August 10 and is scheduled to continue through August 20. During demolition, some exits from buildings around the courtyard will be temporarily closed for safety reasons. Please use alternate exits as marked during this time.
Hours of construction are 7am - 7pm weekdays, in keeping with the City of Berkeley noise ordinance. Most days construction activities will end around 4pm. Work is also scheduled to occur on Saturday, August 14 starting at 9am. The project will adhere to regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes, and storm-water runoff.
Questions or concerns about the project should go to Christine Shaff, UC Berkeley Facilities Services, at 643-4793 or cshaff@cp.berkeley.edu. Other campus resources include the UC Office of Environment Health and Safety at 642-3037.
We apologize for any inconveniences this work causes and thank you in advance for your patience with the construction.
